Episode: NSG Commander: Tips to Build Army-Like Discipline
About Col. Kaushal Kashyap
Hey guys, this one is really close to my heart.
Col. Kaushal Kashyap grew up in Miao, Arunachal Pradesh—the youngest of three military brothers—and earned India's highest peacetime bravery award, the Shaurya Chakra, in 2007. As a Captain in 21 Para SF, he built a clandestine intelligence network in hostile terrain through sheer cultural skill and presence of mind. In an intense close-quarters battle, he took down two top terrorists and personally led the fight in an inhospitable area where most would have folded. Later, he commanded India's elite NSG Black Cat Commando unit—the absolute pinnacle of Indian counter-terrorism force. His father was a District Officer, his mother a teacher, and he was educated at Hilton's School Dehradun, bringing discipline rooted in both intellect and duty.
So when he walked into my studio, I felt the room shift. But here's what got me—he didn't come to lecture about discipline. He came to translate it. To make it actually relevant to your life.
I brought him on because you're all trying to build better habits, better discipline, and you're stuck. You think discipline is about grinding through misery, about denying yourself stuff. But Kaushal reframed it completely: discipline is an act of self-love. When you show up on the days you don't feel like it, when you keep your word to yourself, when you build systems that support your goals—that's you proving to yourself that you matter.
What absolutely blew my mind: he made transformation sound so systematic. Purpose, environment, consistency in small things, accountability, adaptation. Not motivation (too unreliable). Not willpower (too finite). Systems. Design. He talked about the 66-90 day cycle for real habit change, cold showers and breathing techniques NSG soldiers use under extreme pressure. And every single tool he mentioned is applicable to the pressures you're facing right now.
You need this because transformation isn't genetic or mysterious. It's just a choice you make repeatedly until it becomes who you are. Whether you want to restructure your mornings, build real discipline, or find the confidence that comes from showing up for yourself—that's what this episode does. He's lived the stakes of discipline: in terror operations where it kept him alive.
Discipline isn't restrictive. It's liberating. Trust me on this one. Watch it. — Divya
