Episode: MARCOS Vijaypal Rawat on Building a Tough Mindset For War | Divya Jain Podcast

About Vijaypal Rawat

I brought Vijaypal on because mental toughness is learnable—and you need to hear it from someone who builds warriors, not motivational podcasters.

Commodore Vijaypal Singh Rawat joined the National Defence Academy, was commissioned into the Indian Navy, and specialised as a Mine Clearing Diving Officer before joining MARCOS (Marine Commandos) in 1992. MARCOS is India's most elite special forces unit, selected from thousands, trained through a 96-hour no-sleep regime called Hell Week that includes lifting logs, swimming in ocean conditions, and obstacle courses designed to break people. He spent decades training, leading covert missions, and commanding elite soldiers. He earned the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), one of India's highest honours for outstanding service. Now, as a retired Commodore, he has turned his expertise into mindset coaching and speaking, sharing what he learned building the toughest soldiers in India's military.

Why I brought him on: You think resilience is something you are born with or you are not. Vijaypal spent his career as a MARCOS commando training people to perform under conditions where their brains naturally want to shut down. He knows how to build mental strength systematically. That changes how you see your own capacity. He does not believe in motivation. He believes in mechanisms.

What blew my mind: When he explained that the difference between someone who breaks under pressure and someone who performs is not innate—it is trained. The MARCOS selection process is not torture; it is deliberate nervous system training. Your nervous system can be exhausted past the point of pain. What happens then? You find out who you actually are. And then he got vulnerable: he talked about understanding your personal stress patterns—whether you freeze, go numb, get aggressive—and building specific countermeasures. That is psychological intelligence, not just being hard. The steel nerves that special forces have? They are built, not born.

Why you need this: Because you are going to face pressure. Exams, job interviews, breakups, decisions that matter. Vijaypal shows how stress physiology works and how deliberate breathing and practiced procedures literally bypass automatic panic responses. That is a tool. Mental resilience is built through progressive challenge, not through willpower alone. You can train your nervous system the same way athletes train their bodies.

Your nervous system can be trained. Start now. — D
