Episode: 5 Signs You're WASTING Another Year of Your Life | @sonalgoelias1755 | DIVYA JAIN
About Sonal Goel
Sonal Goel is an IAS officer—one of India's toughest exams—and she came on to tell you if you are wasting your year. Spoiler: probably.
Sonal appeared for the Civil Services Examination in 2007 and secured an All India Rank 13, joining the 2008 IAS batch. That alone says something: while thousands take the exam, she cracked it in the top 15. But here is what matters more: over 16 years, she has held key administrative roles across diverse regions—from the patriarchal belts of Haryana to rural Tripura—driving initiatives in governance, women and child welfare, and rural development. She is currently Secretary to the Government of Tripura. She is not someone who cracked an exam and disappeared. She is someone building systems that actually change lives at scale. She has 2.5 million followers on social media because people recognise that she walks the talk. She hosts a podcast called Shikhar Ka Safar (Journey to the Summit) featuring real stories of resilience and achievement. She was invited to speak at the House of Lords in London on Corporate Governance and Sustainability, and addressed students at leading London universities on Youth Empowerment. In 2025, she received the Empowerment and Development Woman Award at the International Women's Day celebrations in Bangkok. This is someone at the absolute peak of her field.
Why I brought her on: You are busy. You are taking courses, scrolling, going to coffee meetings, calling it networking. And you are wondering why you are not actually *moving*. Sonal cuts through the noise. She did not become an IAS officer through motivation; she did it through strategic clarity and relentless execution. And she is here to show you the difference between being busy and being clear.
What blew my mind: Her five signs framework is not motivational—it is a brutally honest checklist. Drifting without goals, wasting time on things that do not matter, settling for mediocrity, not developing actual skills, operating without mentorship or accountability. When she laid these out, I recognised myself. The diagnosis hit because it is accurate. She took the same principles that cracked the IAS exam—clarity, strategy, consistency—and showed how they create success anywhere. Most people just will not apply them.
Why you need this: Because wasting your life happens quietly. It is not dramatic. It is days of unfocused effort and wondering why nothing is moving. Sonal shows you that the same rigorous thinking that solved India's toughest exam can solve your life. The difference between someone who uses their 20s strategically and someone who drifts through them? It is not intelligence. It is clarity, mentorship, and accountability.
Stop being busy. Start being clear. — D
